William A. Zucker
Senior Consultant
|
William A. Zucker is a Senior Consultant with Cutter Consortium's Business Technology Strategies practice. He is also a frequent speaker at Cutter Summits and symposia. Mr. Zucker is a partner at McCarter & English, LLP, in its Boston office. He works actively in the field of dispute resolution as a member of technology panels for both the American Arbitration Association and the International Institute of Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR). Mr. Zucker also serves as a mediator and actively participates as a judge at the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna, Austria.
His knowledge from his national and international practice is set forth in the CPR's Avoiding and Resolving Technology Disputes, which he coauthored. Mr. Zucker's practice is rooted in his experience as a trial lawyer who saw failed business agreements at their worst and who was then recruited by clients to negotiate improved business arrangements. He later ran a consulting company that focused on issues arising from the intersection of law and technology. Today, while continuing to practice trial law, he emphasizes other aspects of dispute resolution and negotiation, including issues relating to outsourcing, technology, and intellectual property. Mr. Zucker is currently chairing a committee working on drafting new expedited rules for arbitration for CPR in response to concerns that arbitration has lost its way. His publications include "Intellectual Property and Open Source: Copyright, Copyleft, and Other Issues for the Community User" in Cutter IT Journal; "The Legal Framework for Protecting Intellectual Property in the Field of Computing and Computer Software" (coauthored with Scott Nathan) in Computer Security Handbook; "IT Litigation Strategies"; and an "Outsourcing Do's and Don'ts" pamphlet. Mr. Zucker is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School. He can be reached at consulting@cutter.com.
"Because of open source software's lack of warranty or support, and given the way open source is developed, it is important to adopt open source technologies that have proven support services and are professionally documented."
